As its name implies, Oldtown is one of the most ancient standing cities in Westeros. Though it has served many masters over the centuries, it is most well-known for being home to The Citadel. The true origins of the city are unknown, predating even the full conquest of the continent by the First Men. Though it is certain that neither the Children of the Forest nor the giants constructed the heart of Oldtown, no one knows who did. Legend states that the Citadel was originally the fortress of a pirate king, so perhaps some of the earliest Ironmen sailed down the coast of the continent and erected the foundations of the city..
Since the conquest of Westeros by the First Men, the city has become one of the largest on the continent, a hub of commerce and learning. The Citadel, at its heart, has the largest library in Westeros and attracts scholars and students alike from all over the continent to share knowledge within its walls.
