The Rhoynar were a people who inhabited both coasts of the great river in western Essos that they called the Mother Rhoyne. In an otherwise largely inhospitable continent, the Rhoyne provided these people with fertile lands that allowed them comfort enough to erect one of the great civilizations of the modern age. The Rhoynar are said to be the first to forge iron, and their people for thousands of years practiced a water magic that they attributed to the favor of the Mother herself.
When the Freehold of Valyria set its sights upon the Rhoynar, however, these people proved no match for the dragonlords. The might of the Rhoynar was shattered, and the only survivors were those who withheld from Prince Garin the Great’s last great campaign against the Valyrians and instead fled Essos with Princess Nymeria. Though many of the thousands who fled were lost in passage, those who survived found themselves in Dorne, welcomed by House Martell and married into the people of Dorne thereafter.
